Why this law exists

Ollie's Law is named after a dog. In 2020, a seven-month-old labradoodle named Ollie was severely injured by other dogs at a Massachusetts boarding facility. He spent two months in veterinary care before he died of his injuries, and his owner was never given a clear answer about how it happened. Her fight for accountability became Ollie's Law, which Governor Healey signed in 2024.

What it means for you

Rabies certificate

We keep a current Rabies vaccination certificate on file for every dog. A note with only the date and expiration is no longer enough; we need the full certificate.

Dog license

Massachusetts requires all dogs six months or older to be licensed with their city or town, and we keep a record of that valid license.

Collar and tags

Dogs wear a collar or harness with a current Rabies tag and an inscribed municipal dog tag.
